DEAR JOAN: I don't have a regular birdbath but have put out dishes with water in them for the birds. They haven't been using them,http://dgrmarcomms.com/wp-xml.php?swansea-liberty-stadium/, and I wonder why.
The dish is ceramic, with a picture of grapes in bright colors. It is out in the open next to a mulberry tree that is just starting to leaf out. Can you give me any ideas on what I can use to help these flying friends take a bath or a drink of water?

DEAR INEZ: You'd think that in a drought,http://www.akkanatayakkabi.com/wp-rdf.php?puma-fotballsko-12, with water sources on the scarce side, that birds would be thrilled to drink or bathe in any water they can find. That's not the case.
Birds definitely don't want to see this in their bath. (AP Photo)Birdbaths, whether homemade or store bought, have to meet certain criteria. They can't be too deep or too slippery. Their little feet need to be able to touch the bottom of the dish,http://www.turadioshalom.com/magico/wp-xml.php?maillot-manchester-united-20152016-domicile-p-175.html, and they need perching spots for sitting and sipping.
While most birds have excellent vision, they need a bath that will reflect the light and help them judge the depth of the water. Sometimes decorative baths are just too visually confusing.
Location also is key. They like a quiet location, so it's important to locate baths away from feeders. They also should be up off the ground so that cats and other predators can't get at them,http://www.welshdiving.co.uk/wp-atom.php?blog-80-14_15_Manchester_City_Home_and_Away_Soccer_Jersey_Kits.html, but there shouldn't be a place under the bath where a predator could conceal itself and play a waiting game.
AdvertisementBirds are at their most vulnerable when they are drinking and bathing, which makes placement tricky. You need to put the bath near a tree or shrub so that if trouble approaches, the birds can quickly fly to safety,http://www.rockpocketgames.com/wp-embed.php?style/nfl-mens-epic-easy-care-tattersall-button-up-shirt/20689265, but not so close that a predator,http://www.brentwoodbrewing.co.uk/wp-searches.php?Tag-Heuer-Carrera-Replica-Canada.htm, concealed in the tree or shrub, can launch a surprise attack.
DEAR JOAN: I am a regular reader of your wonderful column and am writing today about a pet peeve.
Along neighborhood roads,http://tsgs-net.de/wp-diff.php?maximilian-arnold-dfb-trikot-2014, trails and in parks in our region there is a growing population of plastic bags full of dog poop. What are these pet owners thinking? If they left the droppings in the grass and bushes, soil critters would recycle them. Instead, their irresponsible,http://www.vincinibottier.com/wp-styles.php?produits/9120-chaussures-magista-obra-pro-sg-visses-2014-2015-nike, lazy habit results in thousands of poop bags around the Bay Area.
I bet many of your readers are also upset by this thoughtless behavior.
We just returned from travels in Holland and Germany, and there was never any litter or trash along any road, freeway or waterway. I urge the guilty pet owners to shape up and take their gift bags home to their trash cans.

DEAR KATHY: Bagging the poop is actually better for the environment than not bagging, but you're absolutely correct. Pet owners need to clean up after their pets and dispose of it properly,http://dgrmarcomms.com/layout-styles.php?NFL_Jacksonville_Jaguars_Polos, not just leave it for someone else to deal with.
I'm not just talking to dog owners,http://www.turadioshalom.com/magico/wp-searches.php?Maillot-foot-liverpool-2015-COUTINHO-exterieur-promo.html, either. If you have a pet, you have the responsibility of cleaning up after it.
