The PrEP medication is covered under most private insurance options as well as Medicaid and the Gilead patient assistance program -- but necessary testing and other monitoring/support services are often not covered.
The new PrEP Assistance Program will reimburse eligible providers for the support services required for eligible high-risk individuals receiving PrEP.
“Lifetime treatment costs for an HIV infection are very high, anywhere from $400,000 - $500,000 per person," said Executive Director of the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) John Barry. "So if we can prevent that, we’re saving all of us a lot of money.”
In the 2015-16 budget, Cuomo included $10 million to support ending the HIV-AIDS epidemic across the state.
"In the eight counties that STAP serves, there are about 1,200 people that we know of that are HIV positive," said Barry. "However, there's another 25 percent of that number who do not yet know they're positive."
The new PrEP Assistance Program is part of the governor's plan to end the HIV-AIDS epidemic in New York by the end of 2020.
