The discovery was made around 7 a.m. in the 2400 block of Freret Street in Central City, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said the investigation is still in its early stages, with few details being released Sunday morning.
Harrison said the 45-year-old HANO officer was working a patrol assignment to secure a construction site in the area when the shooting occurred.
He said the officer was found fatally shot inside his patrol vehicle, which rolled and came to a stop at the intersection. The officer had been with HANO for two years.
According to the HANO website, its officers work alongside the NOPD to help secure families and help monitor crime cameras in HANO communities.
In 2011, a bill was passed, which allowed HANO officers to make arrests, collect and process evidence and transport suspects to Central Lock-Up.
Additional information in the investigation is expected Sunday.
Anyone with information on a crime can call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
