Eddie Listorti, ANZ's co-head of fixed income currencies and commodities, said the ETF market had enormous potential in Australia predicting the market will double in size to $40 billion by 2018.
The bank would distribute the products through its wealth management network but the back end would also create opportunities for the bank's markets business that buys and sells currencies and commodities and create new funding sources.
These are financial instruments we trade every day, said Mr Listorti, who added that ANZ is one of the largest gold traders in the Asian market.
The 'markets' business is flow-driven and we will be able to access gold bars, pick up a better source of funding while the FX transactions are done within ANZ's FX markets. From a bank perspective it makes a lot of sense, he said
ETF Securities has about $US19 billion ($24.3 billion) of exchange traded funds listed globally and was the first firm to list a gold-linked product in 2003, creating one of the largest ETFs in the world.
The firm's founder, Graham Tuckwell, whose idea to effectively list gold on a stock exchange was a key moment in the growth of ETFs, said the tie-up with ANZ marks its re-entry into Australia.
Now is the time because Australia will start to show the growth that other markets have shown, he told Fairfax Media.
We have a lot of catching up to do [in Australia] even though there's a lot superannuation money. The market hasn't understood or known about it as much as the overseas market.
Australia's exchange-traded-funds market has almost tripled in size to $18 billion since late 2012, according to Betashares, as more than 100 products have been listed.
While the growth of Australian ETFs has been strong, the market remains small in a global context.
By comparison, Canada, with an economy one-fifth bigger than Australia's, has more than 350 ETFs totalling $US65 billion. The value of shares traded each month on the Toronto Stock Exchange averages $US120 billion, compared with $US56 billion traded on the Australian Securities Exchange.
ETFs also account for less than 1 per cent of trading activity in Australia, compared with 10 per cent in the US.
BlackRock measures the total global ETF market of 5,500 products worth $US3 trillion the securities have been embraced by individual retail investors right through to global hedge funds.
It really is quite significant that a major Australian bank is entering the ETF market and there are various trends overseas such as a couple of big fund managers buying smaller firms because it was too hard to build expertise, said Tuckwell.
In addition to the gold ETF, which will be tied to physical gold bars stored at the bank's vault in Singapore, the bank will offer US dollar and Chinese renminbi ETFs, which will be held as deposits with the bank.
ANZ is also offering three equity index linked ETFs, including a standard ASX100 ETF, an S P/ASX 300 High Yield Plus ETF and an S P 500 High Yield Low Volatility ETF.
The latter two ETFs could be described as smart-beta style ETFs designed to use a systematic stock selection process to deliver specific outcomes. ETFs have proved extremely popular with investors around the world who have used these securities to add exposures at low costs of usually less than half a per cent per annum. 相关的主题文章:
